It was a moving Remembrance Day ceremony Friday morning at the Hanover Cenotaph — and the Hanover Air Cadets are standing guard all day.
They have been there since 8 AM and will continue their silent vigil until Midnight.
Warrant Officer Second Class Nathan Harris says the ten member team will stand guard at the Cenotaph two at a time for half hour shifts throughout the day.
Harris feels it is a powerful image to the public.
The young Cadets will be in full dress — some in combat uniform — standing perfectly still holding their riffles and bayonets with heads bowed in deep respect.
Harris and his fellow Cadets view this task as an honour and tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
He says braving the elements until midnight and standing motionless for half hour shifts at a time over the 16 hour day is a very small price to pay when we consider what our veterans and troops have done for us.
Harris encourages young and old alike to take some time today to visit the Cenotaph and pay their respects.
He says its important we never take for granted the price that was paid for our freedom.
This year’s 16 hour vigil is a build up for next year, when the Hanover Air Cadets plan to hold a 24 hour vigil at the Cenotaph.
