Kincardine gets a pretty good report card when it comes to recycling.
The General Manager of Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling Vince Cascone says what they pick up for recycling is dictated by what they can sell the material for and whether or not there is a consistent market.
Cascone says Kincardine residents have had no problem buying into the program although a spike in education was needed during this past summer.
He says seasonal visitors were calling wondering if BASWR picked up what is called mixed rigid plastic.
Cascone says they have been collecting the material since the beginning of the year because they have found a market for it in the Sarnia area where it goes into making automotive parts.
You would find the material in pails, the containers you have when buying a sandwich or a cake, along with the inside containers for cookies.
On the other hand another continuing question is why tetra-paks aren’t collected.
Cascone says the process is too expensive because it has to be stored and processed separately and needs to be shipped separately.
He says their studies show it would take about a year to get a load of it and by then no one would probably want it anyway.
BASWR is a non-profit organization that began in 1990 in Saugeen Shores and is now servicing close to 90 per cent of Bruce County.
