The City of Owen Sound has 3.5 million dollars worth of projects to consider for the Kenny Drain storm system.
Manager of Engineering Services Chris Webb says the upgrades to the drain system on the east side of the city will be necessary to cope with future development there.
The drain starts near the Owen Sound Hospital, runs past the PPG plant, down near the Kiwanis soccer fields and crosses over to empty into the Owen Sound harbour.
Webb presented the Environmental Study to council, but says the 3.5 million dollar price tag is actually meant to be spread out in a series of projects over the next five to ten years.
He says the Kenny Drain has had some work done, and has been separated from the waste water stream as not to put further stress on the water treatment plant.
However, he says increased run-off from heavy rainfall, snow melt, and development is going to put strain on areas that haven’t been improved — most of which are located in the industrial park in the north part of the city.
Webb says culverts need to be reinforced or replaced to prevent erosion, as does the storm water management pond in the industrial park, along with some road crossings.
