The town of Meaford has decided to go after insurance companies, to recover some of the cost of fighting fires.
CAO Frank Miele says a deal has been struck with “Fire Marque” which is only the second in Ontario.
Fire Marque would go after a homeowners insurance company to get back some costs for the town, with the company keeping 30 percent of the money.
Miele says council has authorized him to find any new revenue source and this is one avenue they decided to explore.
He says most homeowners insurance already has a section about Fire department services charges ranging from 500 dollars to 25 thousand.
Frank Miele doubts the move will impact on the cost of homeowner insurance.
The town CAO says the money will not go into general revenue, but will be used by the fire department for better equipment and training.
The new system will be in place by the end of this month.
Fire Marque has also submitted a similar proposal with Saugeen Shores — and Council has asked Fire Chief Phil Eagleson to prepare a report.
Collingwood has already turned down the idea.
