A different kind of bike ride is getting underway this morning.
Richard Holloway plans to cycle all the way around Georgian Bay, with some help.
Holloway leaves from the Wasaga Chamber of Commerce Parking lot at 9 o’clock and he will head for Meaford, Owen Sound, Tobermory, Sudbury and Mactier.
The ride is expected to take 8 days.
Holloway has 9% of his vision, so he’ll be on a tandem bike with his nephew guiding the way.
Holloway jokes if they keep the water always to the right, there’s no way they can get lost.
The goal of the ride is to raise awareness of the abiliites of people who have physical challenges.
Holloway is also preparing for a longer ride next summer, right across Canada.
Holloway says when he lost his vision, he became depressed, and ballooned to more than 400 pounds.
He started running to lose weight and eventually ran more than a dozen marathons.
Holloway says the best part of running the marathons was passing sighted people and thinking he might have changed the minds of people who think disabled people aren’t capable.
