Students in the Walkerton area are pulling some strings to promote drug awareness.
The students are in the SALEP program, which is Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils.
Jackie Ralph is the puppeteer at the Canadian Mental Health Association’s FAN club and says the students are creating puppet shows to bring the message to area school kids.
Ralph says they’re targetting students in Grades Four through Eight in an effort to equip them with knowledge before they head into highschool.
Ralph says the students are really taken by the FAN Club puppets and have decided to take on extra topics for their presentations.
Teacher Beth Fisher says the SALEP program is designed for at-risk students who otherwise may not finish school.
She says the Walkerton SALEP program includes kids aged 14-17 from Kincardine, Paisley, Chesley, Walkerton, Hanover and Durham.
Presentations begin at area schools this week, with a performance tomorrow at Mildmay Public School, Walkerton Public on Monday, and a third school yet to be determined on Tuesday.
