Raw milk producer Michael Schmidt is continuing his hunger strike, in his battle with the government over cow sharing.
Late last month, Ontario Court Justice Peter Tetley overturned an earlier ruling and convicted Schmidt of 15 of 19 charges related to raw milk.
Just as that ruling was coming down, the Durham area farmer was facing possible contempt of court charges in B.C. over his involvement with a cow-share program there.
Friday is day 9 of his hunger strike to protest what Schmidt calls unjust laws against individual rights.
Schmidt tells Bayshore Broadcasting News, if the court would agree that the cow share plan is not breaking the law — he would end his hunger strike.
He wonders about the timing of the most recent court ruling in Ontario.
Justice Tetley delayed his decision a couple of times, and Schmidt says by the time it came down there was no time left to make it an issue in the Ontario election campaign.
Schmidt says while the government keeps trying to clamp down on raw milk, he is seeing a boost in demand.
