If you’re picking up your mail in Walkerton, you might want to practice turning off your car.
Brockton Council is considering adopting an anti-idling by-law.
Mayor Charlie Bagnato says Walkerton is an area where idling is a big problem.
He says because there is no home mail delivery, everybody comes into the Walkerton post office and leaves their vehicle idling.
He says the Environmental Advisory Committee started talking about it eight months ago, and they’ve finally got input from other communities, like Owen Sound, that have implemented the by-law.
Bagnato says they’re keeping the by-law simple – any vehicle seen idling for more than three minutes will be fined a minimum of 50 dollars to a maximum of two thousand dollars.
However, he says they won’t be too strict, issuing warnings at first.
Bagnato hopes implementing an anti-idling by-law will help educate people on the effects idling the car engine has on the environment.
