Once a scene of carnage will now be a moment of celebration.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is taking place this afternoon at the 18 Mile River Bridge near Lucknow.
A number of representatives including those from the federal and provincial governments are expected to join Huron-Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 18 Mile River Bridge on Bruce Road 86 this afternoon at 3 P.M..
The bridge — located in Huron Township just west of Lucknow — reopened to traffic on May 27th after nearly a year due to construction delays.
Twolan says he is relieved now that they have got a finished product and hopes they won’t have to replace the bridge for a long time.
Twolan says traffic was detoured through Ripley during the time the bridge was closed.
He says that provided an opportunity for motorists to stop by the Village and see some of the businesses.
But he says there were some commercial traffic that may have been impacted by the closure because they had to rearrange schedules or were not able to get to their destination.
The biggest factor of the delay was the collapse of the support beams back on November 10th where 6 workers were injured at the site.
Twolan says he is still thankful that no one was killed as a result of the construction collapse.
Bruce and Huron Counties are still awaiting a report from the Ministry of Labour on their investigation of the collapse.
