It’s the first day on the job for the new Chief of Police in Owen Sound.
Chief Bill Sornberger was sworn in Friday evening at their Police Awards Ceremony.
He tells Bayshore Broadcasting News it was an extra special night considering his mentor, former Chief of Police Tom Kaye was on hand for the announcement.
Sornberger has been acting Chief since Tom Kaye retired to join the National Parole Board.
Garth Pierce — the Chair of the Police Services Board — says Sornberger showed the Board over the past several months all of the qualities and experience that they wanted in the new Chief of Police.
For his first day, Sornberger says he’s meeting with Owen Sound Council today to discuss Owen Sound Police Services taking over City By-Law and Parking Enforcement duties, which began today.
Sornberger says the move is part of a plan looking for efficiencies in their budget.
He says they also eliminated the Deputy Chief position.
As for the slated Owen Sound Jail closure, Chief Sornberger says he might know more following this Thursday’s election, but he’s basically been left in the dark.
Chief Sornberger will mark 35 years of service this month.
