A world record at the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest.
Joel Jarvis of St. Thomas is the new world record holder for a giant squash.
Jarvis’ squash weighed in at 1486.6 pounds, a whopping 250 pounds heavier than the old world record.
Jarvis says his persistence has paid off but he gives most of the credit to his pregnant wife, Christine, who has had patience through the whole ordeal.
Christine is due to give birth this very weekend.
Meanwhile, everyone thought a world record was in sight in the pumpkin division trying to beat 1810 pounds but it didn’t happen.
Jim and Kelsey Bryson of Ormstown, Quebec defended their championship from last year, with a 1657.6 pound pumpkin this year.
Jim Bryson says at the start of the season it’s 12 hour days and a lot of work all season long
Bryson says the seed for his prize winning pumpkin came from the world record pumpkin of two years ago.
Normally these seeds were selling for 200 dollars each, but he got one free from the owner.
The Port Elgin Pumpkinfest concludes today.
