A special “Take Back the Night” peace rally is taking place in Walkerton Heritage Water Garden tonight.
The event is being hosted by the Women’s Shelter of Owen Sound and Kincardine.
Organizer Martha Schamott says the focus of the evening is “No more violence against women.”
She says Take Back the Night is all about making the night safe, so women don’t have to be afraid to walk down the street alone at night.
Schamott, a former client of the Women’s Shelter, says more needs to be done to promote awareness of violence against women.
She says the evening will be very peaceful, unlike some of the larger more rowdy Take Back the Night events that have taken place in larger urban centres over the years.
Schamott says to goal of the evening is to provide support for women, especially those who may be living with violence.
There will be speakers on hand, as well as chance for victims to share their stories, pamphlets and resources will also be available.
This is the first time Walkerton has ever played host to a Take Back the Night rally.
Schamott hopes there will be a good turn out.
She encourages men, women and children alike to come out and show their support for the cause.
It runs from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM.
