There is a symposium about alcohol abuse in Owen Sound tonight.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit and the Grey Bruce Healthy Communities Partnership are presenting the program called “What’s the Big Deal About Alcohol?.”
It begins at 7 PM at the health unit office in Owen Sound.
Doctor Gerald Thomas — a Senior Research and Policy Analyst for the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse — will be the keynote speaker.
Event Co-Chair Linda Bumstead says the symposium will examine the culture of alcohol misuse.
Stats show about one in four Grey Bruce residents are considered heavy drinkers — which is much higher than the rest of Ontario.
Bumstead says they will address the hidden costs associated with alcohol sale, service and consumption.
She notes it’s a proven fact that alcohol abuse increases the risk of injury and even death.
Bumstead says they will also look at strategies that will help protect individuals, organizations and the community form problems associated with misuse.
This event will also see the first viewing of the Photovoice project.
