The “Play in Bruce Grey” program is enjoying great success as it heads into its fifth year.
Health Promoter Jason Weppler with the Grey Bruce Health Unit provided a program update to Georgian Bluffs councillors at a recent council meeting.
Weppler notes Play in Bruce Grey is a physical education strategy for all 17 municipalities in the two counties — and has been in place since 2007.
He says they recognized a need for a fitness strategy in the area — after it was found that 62 per cent of Grey Bruce residents are overweight or obese, well above the provincial average of 52 per cent.
Weppler says the program is now entering its second year of funding through an Ontario Trillium Grant of 60 thousand dollars.
He says they enjoyed great success last year with programs such as the “Longest Day of Play” on June 21st, educational forums, walking clubs and more.
For year two, Weppler says they are looking at adding a Shortest Day of Play on December 21st.
Weppler adds they have also succeeded in raising awareness of the obesity issue in the region, which is the first step to addressing the problem.
