Kincardine council wants to host any public hearings involving the Deep Geological Repository site project.
The environmental assessment for the DGR was submitted earlier this year by Ontario Power Generation.
The next steps include appointment of the Joint Review Panel which will assess the project and prepare a report and recommendation for the federal Minister of Environment.
Part of the development of the report will include a public meeting which could come as early as next year.
Kincardine councillor Jacqueline Faubert suggested the municipality invite any hearing process to the municipality.
Faubert says they’ve got the facilities to hold such an event and it would give those attending to come and see what Kincardine has to offer.
The proposed DGR project will hold low and intermediate level waste currently stored on the Bruce nuclear site in Tiverton, as well as waste from the nuclear generating stations at Bruce, Pickering and Darlington.
