Students in the Bluewater District School Board are pretty much on par with the rest of the province’s students.
The EQAO standardized test scores have been released, and Bluewater Superintendent of Education Steven Reid says the board will focus on making improvements in math.
That’s because Grade 3 student scores show a slight incline in both reading and writing, but a decline was observed in math scores.
Reid says that is on par with results from across Ontario.
Reid says they are pleased however to see a nine per cent increase in writing scores over the past five years.
Since 2002-03, Bluewater Grade 3 scores have increased by 12 per cent, 21 per cent, and 12 per cent for reading, writing, and math respectively.
The Grade 6 results shows the same trend — an incline in reading and writing scores, and a decline in mathematics.
Since 2002-03, Grade 6 scores have increased by 16 per cent, 15 per cent, and two per cent, in reading, writing and math respectively.
When it comes to high school students, the Grade 9 students are tracking above the provincial average for both applied and academic mathematics.
And Reid points out Bluewater students have been very successful with the literacy test, with an 82 per cent pass rate over the past five years.
Reid says Bluewater staff will continue to use the EQAO results as well as other data to better understand the strengths and needs of students across the district to make improvements in the classrooms.
