RCMP Constable Trish Clough is from Point Clark and is currently posted to Burgeo, a remote community on the west coast of Newfoundland.
Clough, and fellow Constable Nicole Hepditch are both trained figure skaters and decided to introduce the sport to the community by starting up a figure skating club.
Recently on Sounding Board, Constable Clough said there has never been figure skating in Burgeo, only hockey and public skating at the community’s arena.
Nearly 50 people have signed up to join the new club, but the problem is making sure everyone can get proper equipment affordably.
Clough says a lot of people have hockey skates, but it’s very difficult to do figure skating moves with them.
Clough says Burgeo’s distance from larger towns and cities makes it difficult to get figure skating equipment easily and freight costs are extrmely high.
The two mounties are turning to Const. Clough’s family and Bruce County for help.
Trish’s mother Sandy is organizing a collection of used figure skates, skate guards, and clothing.
Sandy Clough says many people have old figure skating items stored away from when their children were younger and she wants as much as possible to be sent to help the club in Burgeo.
Sandy Clough has organized various collection points around Bruce County where new, or used figure skating equipment in good condition can be dropped off.
Drop-off locations include Bruce County EMS stations in Walkerton, Port Elgin, and Kincardine. There is also a drop-off box at Kincardine Home Hardware and the Ripley-Huron Community Centre.
