President “Smokey” Thomas says his members feel it is the right step to take as the Union fights recent layoffs.
Thomas tells Bayshore Broadcasting news he sent a 17 page letter to Health Minister David Caplan, detailing changes in the operation of the Unit and calling for an assessor to be appointed to carry out a review.
The Union wants the Health minister to probe what programs are being offered and to assess the quality of management at GBHU.
The letter to Caplan expresses grave concerns of the union, that the Grey Bruce health unit cannot provide mandated programs and services because of cuts to front line staff.
Thomas also re-iterated his plan to call a Town Hall style meeting soon where OPSEU will invite Management from the health unit to talk about changes and take questions from the general public. No date has been set for that.
MOH Dr. Hazel Lynn maintains OPSEU new long before the contract talks last year that layoffs were possible, especially if Queens park reduced it’s funding.
The Union disputes that claim saying no indication was given about layoffs during the contract talks.
OPSEU’s request has also been copied … to local MPP’s Bill Murdoch and Carol Mitchell
