The Southampton Art School is having their Grand Re-Opening and are screening a special film about an aboriginal figure.
The school had a special art gallery in celebration of some of the renovations that had taken place inside the facility.
Meghan Clouatre — a Director at the school — appearing on Soundingboard says people came and saw the renovations to the gallery and the upstairs apartment.
She says no one knows much about the apartment that was renovated to be just as nice as the gallery below it.
Clouatre says yesterday featured the work of artist Jane Champagne who passed away this spring.
She says Champagne’s work was the first work to grace the re-opening of the art gallery.
The gallery will be screening a documentary this afternoon by filmmaker Doctor Sandy Greer called “Soop on Wheels.”
Doctor Greer was also on Soundingboard and says the film is about the life of the late Everett Soop, a political cartoonist living in Alberta.
Doctor Greer says she was surprised when first meeting Soop that he was confined to a wheelchair due to Muscular Dystrophy.
She recalls the time when he first gave her a hard time but they became friends afterwards and remained friends for 14 years.
Doctor Greer says Soop did more with his life than many people did in full health.
Doctor Greer says Soop received a lifetime achievement award from the aboriginal community before he passed away in 2001.
She says the documentary raised Soop’s profile and his people later realized that they haven’t paid much attention to Soop and his work.
The documentary is being screened at 1 P.M. and 4 P.M. and tickets cost 15 dollars each.
There will be a reception where people can meet Doctor Greer later in the evening at 7 P.M.
