Safe n’ Sound hopes to open its doors in March according to Program Co ordinator Jenny Wright-Elliott.
She says they’ve been looking for just the right location since they decided last year not to open an overnight shelter.
Instead they’re using the ‘community space’ model that will offer the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless basic necessities such as a kitchen, laundry facilities, a shower as well as support and advocacy.
Wright-Elliott says they’re finalizing the details of a lease and expect to make the announcement soon.
She says one of the problems with a rural community such as Owen Sound is that they’re dealing with the ‘hidden homeless’; people who are sleeping on a friend’s couch, those living in cars or tents and those on the verge of eviction.
Wright-Elliott says there are more than 54 hundred vulnerable households and at least 5 to 20 absolute homeless people in Owen Sound.
