ouncil has approved the first step on the path to making the building known as Prince’s Court a heritage building.
The designation would cover three facades of the building, and some adjacent greenspace.
Heritage Chair Vern Fry says Prince’s Court is close to Victoria Park and the lawn bowling club that used to be located on part of the property was founded in 1897.
The house was built in 1896 in the Queen Anne Revival style and is believed to have been built by industrialist Alexander MacKenzie, the Canadian founder of resource company Brascan.
Fry says they believe MacKenzie, who was a Kincardine native, built the house for his mother after the passing of his father.
Fry says after this step in the process, council will pass a by-law designating the heritage property. It is then advertised so the public can comment before it is given second, third, and final approval by council.
