The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Goderich waged a lengthy offensive to get the dedication.
Branch 109 President June Pyette says after wrangling with the province for more than a year the approval came after one final push.
Pyette says the town of Goderich jumped on board right away, but they had to convince some townships that they wouldn’t have to change any addresses along the dedicated stretch of hwy 21.
She says after they dealt with the townships, they had to get approval from the County’s which slowed the process a bit.
Pyette says she and her fellow Legionnaires feel a sense of accomplishment in getting the highway named in honour of Huron and South Bruce veterans.
The highway is named for those who served in the two World Wars, the Korean conflict, and also for soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan.
The road will officially continue to be known as Highway 21.
