Don Tedford says 109 permits were issued with a construction value of over 11 million dollars.
He says major sources of that revenue included the new Shoppers Drug Mart and LCBO development and is hoping a permit for the new Boston Pizza will be a major project this year.
Tedford says other applications are before the Planning Advisory Committee for development in the industrial park.
He says the steady levels of new commercial and industrial construction continue because the projects were already in the works last year.
Tedford also believes the particular businesses and industries are able to expand because they’ve had financial success that has made it easy for them to expand when construction costs and interest rates are low.
He admits construction numbers are declining on single family homes. 19 permits were issued last year, a sharp drop from the all-time high of 34 in 2003.
However, Tedford says the level of new mult-residential housing units like apartments, townhouses, and condominiums will likely remain the same this year or maybe even increase because those types of housing are geared to senior citizens.
