The Conservative MPP introduced a motion yesterday calling upon Premier Dalton McGuinty to put a moratorium on rural school closures.
Wilson says he wants to see McGuinty do two things before any more schools are closed.
He wants a review of the funding formula to be completed and he wants to see the creation of an alternate use facility report.
Wilson says rural schools are the lifeblood of communities.
He points to the example of Elmvale, Ontario, where he says a study showed if the town’s high school closed, so would 50 per cent of its businesses.
Wilson says McGuinty lied last year when he promised he would save rural schools.
According to Wilson, there are 50 schools slated for closure across the province already, although he says the government hasn’t released the list yet.
However, Wilson is expecting his motion to fail since the Conservatives and NDP are greatly outnumbered by the Liberals.
And he says rural communities represent only about 10 per cent of the vote and so the Liberals ‘just don’t care’.
