The shutdown of the G.M. Truck plant in Oshawa will impact parts suppliers across Ontario.. but so far, it appears the impact locally will be minimal.
General Motors announced Tuesday it was closing down 4 plants including the Oshawa operation.
It will close in 2009 with at least 1 thousand workers affected.
PPG in Owen Sound makes automotive glass, but has been shifting its production over the last few years to architectural glass for homes and businesses.
Plant Manager Tom Kloss doubts the shutdown in Oshawa will have much impact on the workers in Owen Sound.
There are some 165 workers at PPG and Kloss believes that total will remain stable.
Down the street at Goodyear, Operations Manager James Howell is also confident there will be minimal or any impact on jobs in Owen Sound.
Howell says his company deals with after market products, so any cutbacks would be caused by layoffs at other parts suppliers not G.M. directly.
