A 49 year old man from Barrie has pleaded guilty to 279 criminal charges, many involving thefts from churches and community centres in Grey Bruce.
Barry Barnes was sentenced to six years in prison yesterday.
Barnes faced charges related to break-ins and thefts in Grey, Bruce, Huron and Wellington Counties – and as far away as Belleville, Oxford, South Simcoe, Waterloo and Port Hope.
Barnes’s criminal record before Monday listed 160 convictions.
Police say most of the latest break-ins were committed since February 2007.
Barnes says he started stealing to help his wife keep her house.
