The provincial government has handed out some funding to local groups for the protecting of local species at risk.
The Ministry of Natural Resources has given 130 thousand dollars to 5 groups: Bruce Peninsula Bird Observatory, Friends of MacGregor Point Association, Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation, Huron Stewardship Council and Ontario Nature.
The Minister of Natural Resources Donna Cansfield say the money is part of the Ontario’s Species at Risk Stewardship Fund, which is 18 million dollars over 4 years to support projects and activities to protect and recover species at risk.
Cansfield says the money is for two projects on reptiles and wood turtles.
Cansfield says the projects will involve data collection making sure both species have a sufficient habitat and the environment is healthy for them to live in the Huron Bruce region.
Cansfield says the MNR will use that data to make sure they are providing what is needed for those species to survive in another area.
