With Spring finally here — the threat of forest fires comes with it.
Over the last few years, the hot dry summers have led to an increase in fires and some are simply the result of carelessness.
Northern Bruce Pensinsula Fire chief Mike Henderson says one concern he has.. is the habit of dumping hot ashes or coals from stoves… into dumpsters.
Henderson says the smouldering ash can cause a small explosion when someone lifts the lid.
He also says the dumpsters that have plastic lids… can melt, producing toxic fumes.
The Fire chief wants people to be careful, and make sure they put out any hot ashes with water before dumping.
One of the biggest concerns he has relates to manpower.
If the fire department is out fighting a needless fire in a dumpster, or in the forest — they aren’t available for emergencies.
