There is a new group in Saugeen Shores.
It’s called the Saugeen Youth Coalition.
SYC Youth Spokesperson Deanna Underwood says focus groups were held by the Grey Bruce Health unit in various areas of Bruce and Grey.
That lead to the discovery there are many youth in the region not comfortable within their own community, who have things to do, or want to live in the community for much longer than they have to.
Underwood says as a result of the group studies, youth coalitions started up in Hanover, Town of the Blue Mountains, and one will soon in Owen Sound.
She says the results also showed Saugeen Shores was an area needing something for its youth as well.
The group contains both those adult and youth over the age of 12.
Its goal is to create a more youth friendly atmosphere within Saugeen Shores.
Spokesperson Patty Underwood says they plan to approach the municipality with their group.
She hopes the town will help them become a Youth Friendly Town.
Of 16 criteria on a checklist, 10 must be met before Saugeen Shores would be considered Youth Friendly.
The group ultimately wants to see more youth friendly activities and feel welcome within their own community.
