A big banner of recognition hangs at GC Huston Public School in Southampton.
Recently, Mrs. Judy Stoner’s grade 5-6 class won a provincial competition surrounding energy and conservation.
It’s run by the Earth Angels; a non profit organization dedicated to encourage students to look at earth conservation practices.
Mrs. Stoner says they started working on projects as outlined by the organization back in November, and wrapped things up in February.
The class received the top award May 12th out of 30 other schools within the province that competed.
Mrs. Stoner says they simply completed the most projects for the win.
The kids did things like check the school for energy efficient lights, look for drafts and wasted energy, and made checklists for each classroom on how to save energy.
She says her class is extremely dedicated to conserving energy and hope to raise money for a final school project by selling energy efficient light bulbs.
It would see sensor lights installed in the hallways of the school, allowing lights to be off when no one was in the hall.
Certificates were awarded to the students, and a large banner is now hanging in the school itself outlining the win.
