The eighth annual Relay For Life in Owen Sound raised 62 thousand dollars for cancer research.
It was held on the weekend and, although temperatures dipped to 2 or 3 degrees Celsius during the overnight event, participants remained on the track at Harrison Park until the closing ceremonies.
With 30 teams registered, an increase over 2010, the local volunteer committee is pleased with the results again this year.
Some money is still coming in, and co-chair Vicky Watson says the 8-year total for the Owen Sound event is now 683 thousand dollars.
This weekend’s event concludes the Relay season in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound with more than 377 thousand dollars raised to help support the mission of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Relay for Life is the Society’s signature fundraiser and it’s unique in that it takes place from 7 PM until 7 AM the next morning to symbolize that cancer doesn’t sleep.
Top team honours went to “Team Angie” who received a celebratory ride around the park on a fire truck, thanks to the Owen Sound Fire Department, along with a special dinner to recognize their fundraising achievement.
Money raised at Relay for Life helps the Canadian Cancer Society fund promising research, and provide local services to cancer patients.
