A developer has been given a two year deadline to get a major development up and running on Owen Sounds’ East side.
Heritage Grove Centre Incorporated has been given site plan approval for 147 thousand square feet of development on a 20 acre property just east of Home Depot on highway 26.
The proposal involves nine stores along the southern part of the property, with parking out front, and a large section near the highway that could be developed at a future date.
A review of the application shows plans for a Fitness centre, Pharmacy, Clothing Store and a Home Furnish or Electronics store.
One store that won’t be going in is Lowes’ — which was long rumoured — as the site plan agreement rules out a grocery store or home improvement location.
Manager of Economic Development and Tourism Steve Furness declined to say what would be in the new development, but says it is great news for Owen Sound.
As part of the development, new traffic lights will be installed at the Home Depot entrance at 20th avenue east, and a transit shelter will be built in the shopping plaza.
Owen Sound Director of Community services Pam Coulter says a number of requirements must be met in the site plan agreement now, but adds this is a major step forward in Commercial development in the city.
