The demolition and cleanup of the old Alexandra School in Owen Sound will wrap up this weekend.
Kieswetter Demolition of Waterloo and Southampton has been the company responsible for the project.
Project Manager Kevin Winger says the demolition team has been able to save more than 80 per cent of the old school for recycling — bricks, roof joists, doors, wood and even the concrete foundation.
The wood, for instance, can and will be re-milled and turned into any wood product a customer may want.
Winger says a lot of work went into properly gutting the school before the machines arrived on site.
He says the team is still taking advantage of every opportunity for further salvage — even the concrete foundation can be re-used.
The new 5.2 million dollar Alexandra School opened its doors for the first time this week to about 250 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8.
Soon, the team will fill the hole, grade the property, put topsoil on it and allow the landscapers to finish up.
Eventually, the site will become a soccer field for the new school.
