Businesses in downtown Goderich are recovering much more quickly than anyone night have thought immediately after the August 21st tornado.
Huron Chamber of Commerce CEO Judy Crawford says more stores are reopening every day on the Square and the streets radiating off it.
Many businesses reopening in their original locations have back-door access because the Square remains off-limits to traffic and pedestrians.
Crawford says the RBC and CIBC bank branches resumed operations recently.
She says the number of businesses reopening their doors either in their original locations or in temporary quarters is amazing.
The Chamber doesn’t have an exact number because as many as five or six merchants resume doing business each day.
Crawford says the Chamber is forming a committee to help the downtown get completely back on its feet again.
They’re looking for retired businesspeople to volunteer in a support role to help merchants that have sustained heavy losses related to the tornado.
Many losses are not directly linked to just the tornado itself.
Crawford tells us some small core-area merchants have seen business fall by as much as 60 to 70 per-cent.
