The 2011 Canadian Plowing Championships are underway in Owen Sound.
The three day competition begins today and the rain this morning only delayed the events by a couple of hours.
Host Committee Chair Brian Davenport tells us they have 18 competitors from across Canada that will compete in three divisions.
Among the competitors is Carrie Davenport of Owen Sound.
The winners in the senior division will go on to represent Canada at the World Plowing Match in Croatia next year.
Davenport says the soft soil conditions are ideal for the participants.
But he notes it’s a tough competition because they must plow a plot of land that is 100 metres long and 20 metres wide in less than three hours.
Davenport hopes to see hundreds of fans in attendance at the event.
He says this is a unique event that is being held within the City limits — and it celebrates farming life.
Davenport says there are also displays as well as horse plowing and antique demonstrations over the three days.
He notes it’s different than the International Plowing Match because their event is on a smaller scale.
The Canadian Plowing Championship coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Keppel-Sarawak and North Grey Plowman’s Association.
It is being held at the Millman property across from the hospital and OSCVI.
