It was a quarry site at 757 Wellington Street in Port Elgin for years.
Now it’s the home of a seven-million-dollar state-of-the-art affordable housing complex.
At its official opening, Manager of Housing Services for Bruce County Susan Earle says the 36 units also boast geothermal energy efficiency.
Earle says all the units except one unit for the handicapped have been spoken for.
She says townhouse tenants have already moved in with apartment dwellers set to take occupancy in mid-September.
The project has been three years in the making with support and help from the senior levels of government down to local organizations donating equipment.
Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith says he’s impressed with the transformation of the site.
Smith says the town donated the land, waived development fees and tipping fees for land that had to be removed.
He estimates the town provided a half-million-dollars worth of services.
Tenant “Gail” couldn’t be happier.
She says she has come from an abused marriage and was thrilled to be able to have this brand new start.
Gail likens herself to a brand new butterfly coming from a cocoon into what she calls “this beautiful setting.”
