The 2011 Council of the Federation Literacy Awards have been announced and a woman with local connections has won.
There are 13 literacy awards handed out by the Federation, one for each province and Territory in Canada.
The Ontario winner is Ningwakwe George, who is originally from Saugeen First Nation.
This year the category was innovation, and the awards reflect someone who has proven to be an innovator in researching, developing or delivering literacy programs
George coordinated the first-ever National Aboriginal Literacy gathering and led the process of setting up a National Aboriginal literacy office.
She is the founder of Ningwakwe Learning Press, a non-profit organization that publishes literacy and education resources.
It has an office in Owen Sound and the administrative office in Saugeen First Nations.
Although Ningwakwe George has won the award for Ontario, she has yet to receive it.
She expects to get the actual award in October or November, from Premier Dalton McGuinty.
