10 days of fishing fun in Owen Sound is now underway.
The 24th annual Salmon Spectacular began at one minute after Midnight this morning and continues until Sunday September 4th.
It’s hosted every year by the Sydenham Sportsmen Association and Co Chair Fred Geberdt says they are ready for thousands of people.
The stormy weather this week delayed the work by volunteers to erect the 300 foot by 100 foot monster tent at the Georgian Shores Marina.
The tent will be the site of different entertainment each day during the Salmon Spectacular — including two giant fish fry’s on each Saturday of the derby.
Geberdt estimates they will play host to about five thousand anglers from across North America this year and close to 60 thousand people overall.
Geberdt adds their studies show the Salmon Spectacular contributes between 1.1 and 1.3 million dollars to the local economy.
Geberdt admits the competition has changed over the years — from a hardcore fishing event to a family festival.
Some of the daily events include Kids Day on Sunday, a Ladies afternoon on Tuesday and a Seniors afternoon on Wednesday.
Co Chair Mike Prevost tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they have close to 150 thousand dollars in prizes up for grabs this year.
There are also boats to be won for the top Salmon and top Trout.
The awards will be handed out at 3 PM on Sunday September 4th.
