When it comes to sand dunes, size does matter, especially to some residents living on Harmer Street in Southampton.
Saugeen Shores council heard recently that the dunes are as high as 25 feet and are blocking the lake view for residents.
Past President of the Southampton Residents Association and current chair of the SRA Beach Committee, Rod McLeod says the residents are paying premium taxes to have a view of the lake.
The dunes, which they say were not naturally created, have taken that away.
McLeod says the value of the affected properties have been significantly reduced and all he wants is that residents get a fair shake in the matter.
He says he doesn’t know how much of the dune has to be chopped off but 10 to 15 feet was being bantied about.
McLeod would like to see the work done this Fall.
Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith says if council decides to proceed with this issue, nothing is going to happen this year because there’s no money in the budget for it.
Smith says the land in question is leased land from the Ministry of Natural Resources and before any work is considered, the MNR and the Saugeen Conservation Authority have to give approvals.
