Food Link Grey Bruce is making sure you put more local food on your dinner table.
Huron Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell has announced over 37 thousand dollars in funding for the Grey Bruce Local Food Project.
Food Link Co-ordinator Freeman Boyd says they have spent some of the money already since it first arrived in June.
Boyd tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the money will help farmers market their food in our region.
Boyd notes they hand out grants to producers to improve their signage and they also advertise which local restaurants use local food.
Grey and Bruce Counties jointly match the announcement dollar for dollar (not each).
Boyd believes more money is being spent on local food since they started the Local Food Project four years ago.
Boyd notes when they started — only about 3 per cent of food sales went into the pockets of local farmers.
He hopes that number climbs to 30 per cent.
Boyd also points out the number of farmers markets locally have climbed from three to 12 in the last four years.
Boyd says it’s a win win situation since consumers get better food and more money stays with farmers in the local economy.
