The final coat of asphalt will soon be applied to the last section of the Grey-Bruce Line where it has not already been done.
Grey County Council unanimously approved the project on Tuesday after a special meeting of the transportation and public safety committee.
The paving work will cost over one million dollars — of which Grey County’s share will be $535,305.
The cost to Grey County will be slightly higher than the capital budget for this work, which was 525 thousand dollars.
Costs associated with all work done on the county line are shared equally with Bruce, which has already approved the project.
Preliminary work is being completed now on three bridges along the reconstructed road.
Once that work is done, the paving will begin.
E.C. King Contracting has been awarded the tender.
This particular project will cover a section of road south of the traffic lights at County Road 5 and north of Scone.
All other sections have already received the top coat of asphalt.
It was originally thought that the work wouldn’t even be done this year at all.
Initially, the two counties planned to collaborate on the reconstruction of the intersection of the county line at Scone, and the paving was scheduled to happen in 2012.
But when it became clear that that project would not be able to proceed this year, the funds were then re-allocated so the paving could be completed now.
Georgian Bluffs Mayor Alan Barfoot is Grey County’s Transportation Chair.
He says it also makes sense to move the paving project ahead because higher than expected traffic volumes on the county line have started to wear away the pavement that’s already been applied.
