Everybody was thrilled to see the return of the Piping Plovers to Sauble Beach several years ago as the birds nested and raised families.
Even senior levels of government did their part protecting the species and their habitats.
However now some from Sauble Beach are wondering when is it enough.
Councillors recently expressed concerns they’re hearing from residents that the beach is becoming messy because of building driftwood near the habitat.
Ministry of Natural Resources staff have said the plovers use the driftwood for protection and as food and cannot be disturbed until the nesting is over which could take the rest of the summer.
South Bruce Peninsula Mayor John Close says council would like to see the beach cleaned up and opened to tourists but they have to abide by the rules set down by the senior levels of government.
Close admits they have received complaints about the condition of the beach but he says there are others who have complimented the town on the true natural beauty of the beach because of the plovers.
Bottom line though the plovers trump the cleaning of the beach and Close says they’ll just have to deal with it.
