If you want to butt out this year, there’s still time to sign up for a free stop smoking program.
The program dubbed “Stop Study” gives you five weeks of nicotine replacement therapy, free of charge.
Grey Bruce Health Promoter Crystal Ferguson says its as easy as visiting www.stopstudy.ca and signing up.
But Ferguson says there’s only about one thousand spaces left and the deadline to sign up is the end of the month.
Last Fall, Ferguson says they enrolled 150 people locally and says the program was successful for a number of participants.
Ferguson says it usually takes smokers a number of attempts to kick the habit.
It’s estimated 1.6 million Ontarians continue to smoke and 16,000 die each year from the effects of smoking.
To receive 5 weeks of nicotine patches, nicotine gum and lozenges, you can visit the website at www.stopstudy.ca
The study is designed to inform health care officials of the impact of offering free nicotine replacement programs in Ontario.
And the Province says the results from STOP participants have shown an improvement of at least two times the typical quit rates.
