With the dog days of summer here, the Owen Sound Animal Shelter has some tips to keep your pets safe.
Manager Renee Robins says first and foremost like humans, animals need plenty of shade and water.
Robins recommends buying a kiddie pool for your pet to keep them cool or spray the hose on them a couple times a day.
Since animals overheat twice as fast as humans — Robbins says leaving the dog in the car while you get groceries can easily be fatal in heat like this.
Robbins says with the heat, you’re going to notice your pets are eating less.
But she says a simple fix is adding more wet canned food to their meals to keep them hydrated.
Robbins says pets are susceptible to heat exhaustion as well and suggests cooling your pet in moderation if you notice their temperature drastically changes.
And she adds your pets may even get irritated in this heat — and may even bite you — so handle with care.
