Plastic bags are becoming a problem in South Bruce
Council is looking into the idea of banning them in the Municipality.
This comes after many Councillors received several complaints from residents of finding plastic bags scattered around their properties from the nearby municipal landfill.
Deputy Mayor Carl Zettel says the reason plastic bags are being blown away is that it is loose and nothing is put in them to weigh it down.
He says because the plastic bags are coming from the landfill the Municipality may get sued.
Zettel says if they want to ban plastic bags they have to do it at the County level.
He says the ban wouldnt be effective if it is just within the Municipality adding people can still bring in plastic bags from other municipalities.
Zettel says the public needs to be educated on the effects plastic bags have on the environment and the Municipality has to manage their landfills better.
Zettel says places like the LCBO have stopped using plastic bags and are going with recycled paper bags.
He says there are also places where people are encouraged to bring in their plastic bags to be recycled and are selling reusable green bags.
Mayor Bill Goetz says he will bring the idea of a plastic bag ban to Bruce County Council.
