Smokers will want to pay attention to a new law.
Starting today it will be illegal in Ontario to light up in a vehicle carrying a child.
The new law is aimed at protecting children under age 16 from the effects of second hand smoke.
If you refuse to butt out while transporting kids or other young people — you could be fined 125 dollars and up to a maximum of 250 dollars.
Miguelle Mann is the Tobacco Enforcement and Education Officer for the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
Mann says it won’t matter if the vehicle is moving or stopped — or if the windows are up are down — you will be charged if you’re smoking with kids in the vehicle.
She says police officers will lay charges as part of their routine traffic stops.
Mann says when it comes to children and their health, they have to step in and give them a voice and protect them from the dangers of second hand smoke.
Studies show children are exposed to as much as 27 times the toxins from cigarettes when they are in enclosed spaces like a car or truck.
