A stretch of Highway 21 between Goderich and Kincardine will soon be known as the Bluewater Veterans’ Memorial Highway.
Branch 109 President June Pyette says after wrangling with the province for more than a year the approval came after one final push.
Pyette says there was talk of putting in signs marking the highway in honour of area veterans before the final approval was given.
She says the word came down from the province relatively quickly after that.
Pyette says a formal ceremony will be held in the coming weeks.
Pyette says that will happen as soon as possible after the signs are posted.
Pyette says the ceremony can’t be held at the highway itself, so Branch 109 will opt for either the Cenotaph or Little Dutch Park on Victoria Street North.
Pyette says she and her fellow Legionnaires feel a sense of accomplishment in getting the highway named in honour of Huron and South Bruce veterans.
She says the highway is named not only for those who served in the two World Wars and the Korean conflict but also for our soldiers currently posted to Afghanistan.
Pyette says it’s also fitting that Highway 21 runs near the site of the old air force base in Port Albert where military pilots and observers trained during the Second World War.
The Goderich Legion has been backed by their comrades in Kincardine in securing the designation.
The road will officially continue to be known as Highway 21.
