On Soundingboard yesterday President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne says the company is affected somewhat by the economic downturn but everyone needs electricity and they expect another successful year.
Hawthorne chuckled when asked about a rumour that there had been layoffs at Bruce Power.
He says some temporary re-start staff were let go last November but they’ll be back this spring.
Hawthorne calls it the normal ebb and flow of the re-start project.
He says the company has plans to hire another 250 people this year.
Hawthorne says he’s going to push really hard for a nuclear plant at Nanticoke, Ontario despite the apparent lack of interest from the provincial government.
He also hinted there could be three or four other announcements crystallize in 2009 but he wouldn’t elaborate on what they might be.
Hawthorne says they have issued an environmental impact statement on the proposed new nuclear site and the public has until May to comment on it.
He says environmentally they have everything covered and he’s finding that most people now are concerned about the influx of people to work at Bruce Power and what it does to a municipality’s infrastructure.
Hawthorne says those issues have also been addressed in the environmental impact study.
