Owen Sound City Councillor Deb Haswell has been re-elected as a director of AMO Ontario Small Urban Municipalities caucus.
Haswell was returned to the position during the OSUM convention in Collingwood this past weekend.
She says the bit issue every delegate from the smaller communities was talking about was the pending release of the Ontario Government’s Provincial Municipal Fiscal Review.
That review, which Haswell feels will be released in early June will contain recommendations on how the Province and Municipalities can deliver quality services at affordable costs.
Haswell says for Owen Sound she hopes this review will answer the question of who should be paying for court security, the province or the city.
She a number of communities across the Province are looking for some relief on the high cost of having local police officers patrol the courts.
Haswell hopes this review will produce some form of action plan rather than just a feel good exercise that results in no change in the Municipal Provincial relationship.
She says the government has been very tight lipped about what may or may not be in the review and how they may respond to some of the concerns AMO has put forward.
Haswell says Owen Sound and other Grey Bruce municipalities are expecting a lot from this review and hope it will put an end to an unsustainable provincial municipally fiscal policy.
