It’s been two years now since 60 Hope Bay cottagers have been denied access to their properties by the Chippewas of Nawash.
Their lawyer, Jill Dougherty says both parties had appraisers go into the cottages over the summer to value the properties for possible compensation.
Dougherty says they’ll eventually compare notes to see how far apart their appraisals might be.
Meanwhile cottage spokesperson Karen McCullogh says while some of the group are still holding out hope of getting back into their cottages…most of them are simply seeking compensation at this point.
She says its difficult for them to head into the holiday season without remembering the terrible time they were having two years ago being asked to salvage their belongings from the cottages.
It’s been almost a year since the Hope Bay cottage owners filed a 50 million dollar lawsuit against Indian Affairs and the Chippewas of Nawash after being denied access to their cottages in December of 2006 after the leases on the property ran out.
